As part of the School Improvement Plan, CCSS conducts an Annual
Review each year, which gives staff the opportunity to review the year
and report student progress. The following are the School Improvement
Projects for SY16-17:
Project 1 – Core Communication Project
GOAL: Given a school-wide Core Communication program grounded in
daily structured lessons, students with significant cognitive
disabilities will increase student performance on the Core Communication
Identification and Application Assessment.
The purpose of the Core Communication Project is to create a tool for
improving student communication skills. By developing a school-wide
strategic list of high frequency core vocabulary words that can be
incorporated into daily lessons and activities. Students will have the
opportunity to engage in hands-on, repetitive activities that will
support language development for students who are non-verbal or have
limited communication skills.
Project 2 – Writing Project
GOAL: Given a school-wide Writing program grounded in daily
structured lessons, students with significant cognitive disabilities
will increase student performance on the Developmental Writing Scale
Assessment and the Word/Letter Assessment.
The purpose of the Writing Project is to create a tool for improving
student communication skills. By developing a school-wide strategic
writing project, students will have the opportunity to engage in
hands-on, repetitive activities that will support language development
for students who are non-verbal or have limited communication skills.
Project 3 – Multiple Pathways Project
GOAL: Given a specific Life Skills and Vocational Curriculum,
students will increase performance on Life Skills Assessment by twenty
points higher than individual baseline assessments.
The purpose of the Multiple Pathways Project is to provide
post-graduation awareness and opportunities for all students. By
providing WCPS students identified as having significant cognitive
disabilities standards based instruction in social skill training,
functional life skills, decision making and self advocacy, and
pre-employment training, WCPS learning community will be better equipped
to fulfill the learning criteria that will successfully prepares
individual students for college, career, and/or community.
Project 4 – PBIS Project
GOAL: Given a system of Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports,
CCSS students will maintain a 5 positive to 1 negative student
interaction as determined by daily data.
The purpose of the PBIS project is to create an environment that
positively rewards good student behaviors, therefore decreasing negative
behaviors. By providing positive praise and positive outlets for
behavioral and sensory needs, negative behaviors will decrease.
Project 5 – Health and Wellness Project
GOAL: Given an incentive program, CCSS students and staff will
improve health by increasing participation in physical activity and
The purpose of the Health and Wellness Project is to create a working
environment that values the health and wellness of all staff members
and to promote a positive means to facilitate the daily stress that can
be associated with employment in a specialized setting for students with
significant cognitive disabilities. By creating opportunities for all
staff to be intrinsically rewarded by improved health, and possibly
externally rewarded for embracing a healthy life style.
